A Bridge Between History and Europe’s Future
České Budějovice (Budweis, Budějce) is the eleventh station of the EVROVIZION project and the largest city in South Bohemia. Founded in the 13th century as a royal city, it developed over the centuries into an important administrative, commercial, and cultural centre. The city reflects the complex history of Central Europe, shaped by different forms of rule and the coexistence of diverse cultural communities.
After the end of the Habsburg monarchy, Budweis became part of the newly established Czechoslovakia. In the 20th century, the city underwent profound political and social transformations. Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the Czech Republic’s accession to the EU in 2004, Budweis is now firmly integrated into the European process of cooperation and exchange.
Budweis exemplifies the layered identities of Central Europe, balancing memory and renewal. The city is known for its well-preserved historic old town and its world-famous brewing tradition, particularly Budweiser beer.
Being named European Capital of Culture 2028 highlights Budweis’s role as a place of cultural exchange, regional identity, and European connectivity. Within the framework of EVROVIZION, Budweis emerges as a vibrant space where local stories and European perspectives engage in dialogue.
