BERLIN, the last venue for the EVROVIZION project, is Germany’s capital. After World War II the city was divided: West Berlin became a de-facto exclave of West Germany surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989) and East German territory, while East Berlin was declared capital of East Germany. In the years following German reunification in 1990, Berlin once again became the capital of all of Germany. With approx. 3.8 million inhabitants, Berlin is the most populous city in the EU. There are more than 20 nonindigenous communities: Turkish, Vietnamese, Russian, Polish, Lebanese, Ukrainian, Palestinian, Serbian, Croatian Italian, Bosnian, Thai French, British, American, Romanian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Austrian, Spanish, Israeli, Egyptian, Iranian, and Syrian. Berlin is also known for its numerous cultural institutions, many of which enjoy international reputation.
